Fair Game: Smart Peels™ for the Fairest of Skin
From freckles to fine lines, learn how Lira Clinical Smart Peels™ refine, rebalance, and restore fair complexions without overstimulation.
This one goes out to my fellow sunscreen hoarders – my near-translucent tribe of pale pals who tan about as well as they dance.
If you fall into Fitzpatrick Skin Types I or II, you know the struggle is real.
But first thing’s first: what even is a Fitzpatrick skin type?
The Fitzpatrick Scale was developed in 1975 in Boston to help classify skin types based on their reaction to UV light. Based on the name, it definitely sounds like ole Fitzy would fall into either 1 or 2.
-
TYPE 1 - The palest of the pale. Early Disney Princess level. We’re talking long sleeves on the beach, indoor hobbies, and an impressive hat collection. Blondies and gingers that have never known a tan in their freckly lives.
-
TYPE 2 - Pale but in denial about it. Have ruined many a summer beach weekend for themselves with their arrogant refusal of sun screen. Their “tan” can go from about “fresh snow” to “egg shell” and they’re very proud of it.
After all, melanin – that magical pigment responsible for our skin, hair, and eye color – is also our body’s built-in defense against UV rays. And let’s be honest… we don’t have much of it.
But before diving into why our skin throws pigment parties (and how to calm them down), let’s talk about what’s actually happening under the surface.
The Science Behind Skin Color
Here’s the wild part: everyone has about the same number of melanocytes, the specialized cells that produce melanin.
What makes skin tones different isn’t how many melanocytes we have, but how active they are and what type of melanin they produce.
There are two main kinds:
• Eumelanin – brown to black pigment that offers stronger UV protection
• Pheomelanin – yellow to red pigment that provides less protection (and gives lighter tones that rosy glow)
People with lighter skin (Fitzpatrick I–II) typically produce more pheomelanin and have smaller melanosomes (tiny pigment packets). These break down more quickly and don’t provide long-term defense.
Darker skin tones, on the other hand, have larger melanosomes filled with eumelanin, which persist longer in the skin and absorb more UV radiation.
In other words, it’s not that pale skin has fewer melanocytes—it’s that they’re less active and produce less protective melanin.
Why Hyperpigmentation Happens
When your skin experiences stress, whether from UV rays, inflammation, acne, or injury, your melanocytes become highly active in an effort to protect you.
They pump out extra melanin, which can sometimes clump unevenly, creating freckles, sunspots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
For Fitzpatrick I and II skin types, those melanocytes are eager but unpredictable.
Even though they’re fewer in number, when overstimulated, they can produce pigment unevenly leading to scattered brown or red patches that linger long after summer fades.
And because fair skin lacks the natural photoprotection that higher melanin levels provide, UV damage accumulates faster and runs deeper, leading to premature aging, sensitivity, and uneven tone.
What can they do?
Two words: Smart Peels™. Getting rid of the hyperpigmented skin in a healthy, safe way to make way for new skin to grow is an extremely common practice and typically yields impressive results.
